Our Impact
Response to Earthquake in Haiti
Within 48 hours of the earthquake that shook Haiti, Share Our Strength wired emergency funds to several organizations on the ground to help provide immediate disaster relief. Through initial grants totaling $145,000, we supported the efforts of the following organizations to provide food, temporary shelter, and medical care to the victims:
- Partners in Health
- CHF (Cooperative Housing Foundation) International
- CARE
- United Nations Foundation
- International Organization for Migration
Although our priority is ending childhood hunger in America by 2015, our international roots run deep. Share Our Strength was founded 25 years ago in response to the famine in Ethiopia. While we have narrowed our focus to ending domestic childhood hunger, we continue to make limited international grants. In fact, Haiti is one of the countries where we've made the largest commitment. For more than 20 years, Share Our Strength has granted more than $3.5 million to support work in Haiti. Much of that support has been directed to the Lambi Fund (LFH), which promotes sustainable development, community micro-credit, and environmental protection in order to effect long-term social change in Haiti.
Our commitment to Haiti will continue as the country rebuilds. While our initial assistance supported emergency responses, we are planning a series of fundraisers to provide additional short- and long-term funding to help rebuild the island nation.
Please check back regularly for updates on our plans to provide ongoing support to Haiti.
