At every stop on the summer meals road trip, the biggest takeaway for me is the joyful reminder that well-fed kids are happy kids. From the little girl who was proud to show off her Justin Beiber t-shirt to the little boy who beat five of his classmates at pool in a row, the children we meet are beneficiaries of the Summer Food Service Program, which once again proved its worth as an investment during a visit to Norfolk, VA.

The Virginia No Kid Hungry campaign launch got some great media coverage! Campaign launch participants, including Jeff Bridges, Gov. Bob McDonnell, and Billy Shore, appeared on several national TV talk shows, the launch was featured on numerous magazines, featured on radio broadcasts, and got great pick-up on the web.

Virginia is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and scenic mountains. But sadly, in the Commonwealth that gave us George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, more than 218,000 children face hunger.

When we surveyed teachers several months ago about hunger in their classrooms, we weren’t surprised to learn that many were worried about their students during the summer months. As one teacher said, “So many of my students return after the summer, sickly and thin. They have not retained any of their skills from the previous year because their main focus is food.”
