Malloy joined the Summit as the keynote speaker to show his support for the School Breakfast Program. Special guest Food Network's Chopped Judge, Chef Marc Murphy, was joined by CTs “lunch ladies” that appeared on an episode of Chopped last season. Breakfast in the Classroom = Positive Results in New Mexico
Mar 6, 2012: I recently visited Deborah Detorie, principal at Montezuma Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the Breakfast in the Classroom program has just started for third through fifth graders. During my tour of the classrooms, where students were eating breakfast during the first few minutes of morning instruction, the teacher asked students to raise their hand if they had not regularly eaten breakfast at home or school before the Breakfast in the Classroom program. Nearly half of the students raised their hands. For those students, it could have been any number of reasons why they missed breakfast -- waking up late, rushing to school, or preferring to play outside with friends. Though for some students, it is more serious, there are simply not enough food resources at home to guarantee a breakfast meal.
National School Breakfast Week
Mar 5, 2012: Today marks the beginning of National School Breakfast week. Is there a more scathing indictment of current policy and practice than that we need to have an officially designated week to call attention to something that should be as routine, natural, and unremarkable as making sure that our children have breakfast before setting out to learn for the day?

Candor Elementary Begins the Day With a Healthy Breakfast
Dec 14, 2011: Early one morning in late September, I visited Candor Elementary School in Montgomery County, North Carolina with Frank Fiorella, the child nutrition director for the county. In just a few minutes I knew Candor was a very special school, a school committed to the well-being of every child. At Candor Elementary, breakfast is just as important as math, reading, language arts or science. Now in its second year of implementation, universal breakfast has become part of the culture of the school.
