Chef Spotlight – Chef Bixby Daugherty
Aug 24, 2012: Chefs are the backbone of so much of the work we do. Whether it’s culinary events that raise critical funds, our nutrition education programs that teach low-income families how to shop and eat on a budget, or even lobbying on Capitol Hill on behalf of hungry kids, chefs are some of our most dedicated volunteers and advocates.
Hunger During Ramadan: Altruism
Aug 13, 2012: Any outsider observing the Muslim month of Ramadan would say that it is an apparently contradicting holiday—a long day of fasting followed by an intense celebration of food! This time of year is probably most known for Muslims unleashing the most dazzling and most colorful recipes that can be found in their cultural arsenal.
Hunger During Ramadan: Awareness
Aug 10, 2012: Ever since I was little the idea of Ramadan has always fascinated me. Although fasting is common in many religions, within Islam it plays an important part of our history, our makeup and our identity as Muslims. Perhaps the fundamental reason being that fasting is one of the five most important things (commonly known as the Five Pillars) that are integral for a practicing Muslim to endure. For this reason alone, I believe that I have always had an acute awareness that there were other people, children, human beings, like myself -- living a life stricken in poverty, and that in one way or another, I needed to help them.
Hunger During Ramadan: Appreciation
Aug 8, 2012: Prior to joining Share Our Strength, I worked closely with the Arab and Muslim communities in the US doing advocacy work, traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, and lived in Cairo, Egypt, and the Gaza Strip in 2007 and 2011 respectively. It was during my stints living in the midst of the amazing culture there that I first learned about Ramadan, the Muslim holiday that marks the ninth month on the Islamic Calendar, and the observance of which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
A Better Future!

Don't Let Hunger Ruin Summer
Jun 4, 2012: Those are just a few things I think of when I imagine what summer is like for a kid. It’s an exciting time of the year when kids can run free and play. But for millions of kids, summer doesn’t mean fun and games. For these kids, summer means going hungry.

Eye-opening Hunger Moment
Mar 16, 2012: During my first semester in college, I began interning at a local food pantry called Project SHARE, where we serve hundreds of people every month with fresh food, clothing, and nutrition education. One day while I was at the food pantry, I saw a woman who works at the café I frequent. She was there along with her family waiting for emergency food. Even though I see hunger and poverty on a regular basis with my internship, I never really thought that the woman I speak to every day during late-night snack runs had been dealing with the issue.
