Because I didn’t eat mine last Wednesday. Along with Share Our Strength’s executive director Billy Shore and dozens of other members of our No Kid Hungry team, I fasted as a form of protest with the proposed House budget that hits the poor hardest through cuts to critical parts of the safety net.

Mark Bittman has quickly become one of my favorite food writers to follow. Some of my favorite recipes came from “The Minimalist” columns in the New York Times Magazine, and I was sad to see them end earlier this year. But it was the end of that column that turned me towards his other inspired writing that goes way beyond cooking to cover complex issues around food and nutrition in our society today, including hunger.

“There are cuts that kill and cuts that don’t kill." Ritu Sharma, Executive Director of Women Thrive Worldwide, shared that sobering quote yesterday at the kick-off of the HungerFast campaign led by Ambassador Tony Hall of the Alliance to End Hunger and other hunger leaders. Ambassador Hall, Bread for the World President David Beckman, Sojourners President Jim Wallis, and Ms. Sharma, decided to fast in order to call attention to the dire impact that proposed budget cuts will have on programs on which low-income Americans depend.
