While down in Atlanta, celebrating the Arby’s official launch of their “[Hungry for Happiness](http://www.strength.org/blog/chad_jones/arbys_kicks_off_summer_tour_in_atlanta/)” summer truck tour, we sat down with the Executive Director of the Center of Hope Thomasville Boys & Girls Club, Nikki McClain-Williams, to get her quick perspective of summer feeding programs. Mind you, this was a short interview as the facility operates with over 150 kids, but Nikki is a woman who operates with a sense of ease and pride for the children of her club.

The sun was high, the tunes were roaring and kids of the Thomasville Center of Hope were thrilled to help kickoff Arby’s mobile truck tour, “Hungry for Happiness!” On Thursday, May 31st, folks from all across Atlanta came together to generate awareness around one of the most critical times of the year for children who struggle with hunger--summer.

Bellies rumbling prevent ears from hearing about Christopher Columbus. The worry of whether or not there will be food for dinner prevents that senior in high school from truly understanding the algorithms being taught. The fear of another night with tummy pains causes recess on the playground to become a trading post, rather than time spent soaring on the swings.

The Secret To This Football Team’s Success? After-school meals. [ 1 comment]

The CBS evening news ran a story this week about the football team in Burke County, Georgia, where 85% of students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch and breakfast. Four years ago the school’s football noticed that his team had no energy and often complained of being hungry. He took matters into his own hands, and worked with the school to apply for after school meals for 500 low-income students through the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
