As a chef, I have a lifelong passion for food. My job is to feed people. So I was honored when Share Our Strength asked me to present a letter to Congress yesterday on behalf of nearly 400 fellow chefs and members of the culinary community, asking our elected representatives to protect kids at risk of hunger. In April we asked you to contact your members of Congress and ask them to protect funding for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) in this year’s Farm Bill reauthorization. Did you know that more than 1 in 7 Americans receives SNAP benefits? And, nearly half of all SNAP participants are vulnerable children who rely on the program for healthy, nutritious meals.

Members of Congress are working to reauthorize the Farm Bill, legislation that provides funding for the SNAP program (formerly known as food stamps). Drastic cuts to SNAP are being proposed that would affect millions of children and families, leaving them even more vulnerable to hunger. Share Our Strength asked our network to share their personal stories about SNAP and federal nutrition programs. These responses demonstrate the critical importance of these programs and debunk many misconceptions. This post is part of a series sharing those stories.
