Un-teaching the Double Cheeseburger
Mar 26, 2012: Though they swear that their favorite snack is a fast food double cheeseburger, the kids in my Cooking Matters class made (and zealously gobbled down) whole wheat carrot pancakes with homemade peach compote, licked their plates clean after veggie tacos, and asked for seconds, even thirds of kale smoothies! These kids came to class itching with enthusiasm to be in the kitchen.

One Part Flour and Two Parts Fun
Feb 24, 2012: The group of pint-sized chefs were beaming as they crowded around the table passing around a large mixing bowl and measuring out the flour for the dough we were preparing. It was week four at the Gosling Road Recreation Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and I was so thrilled to teach the kids how to make a healthy snack. We were making two dozen soft pretzels. Quite a tall order for such small chefs!

May 20, 2011: Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters is host to an incredibly talented, caring and committed group of 22 full and part-time AmeriCorps National Direct members. These AmeriCorps members serve for 9-12 months with Cooking Matters Lead Partner organizations across the country to help expand the reach of our Cooking Matters programming and to ensure a positive classroom experience for both our participants and volunteers.

A balanced diet is an OATMEAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE in each hand.
May 6, 2011: Over the past 7 months as an AmeriCorps volunteer with Cooking Matters Los Angeles, I have become smitten with quite a few Cooking Matters recipes and have even gone so far as to make them at home and text pictures of my handiwork to our program coordinator, Catherine Luu*. Tortilla Lasagna, Mini Pizzas, Mango Salsa with Homemade Tortilla Chips—to name a few. However, there is one recipe in particular that will always bring back vivid memories from various classes: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies.
