School Breakfast Programs: See them in action

Posted by Susan Berkun on Thursday, March 3, 2011

breakfastParents and teachers agree – getting a healthy breakfast is the best way to start the school day off on the right foot. Unfortunately for a lot of children, eating breakfast before school isn’t possible, either because of hectic schedules, or for some, because there just isn’t enough food in the house to eat.

Now, thanks to support from Weight Watchers, and their Lose for Good Program, Share Our Strength will be providing grants to expand access to school breakfast in 16 communities across the country. These grants will focus on promoting alternative breakfast models. These include Breakfast in the Classroom, where kids (and teachers!) eat breakfast together during homeroom or first period; Grab-N-Go breakfast, where kids get their breakfast from a cart in a high traffic area and eat either in common areas or in their class; or Second Chance breakfast – popular in high school when kids often aren’t hungry first thing in the morning – where kids can eat during a ‘nutrition break’ between first and second period.

At first, some schools and teachers worry that these kinds of breakfast programs will interrupt teaching time, or cause problems with clean-up. But seeing is believing – check out this video to hear first hand from a school that has tried it and would never look back. Giving kids breakfast at school doesn’t just help the kids who come from homes that may not always have enough to eat – it helps all kids start the day right.\
