Helping Other Mothers This Mother's Day

Live Your Best Life Walk LogoMy son Thomas and his friend Swep have always been good sports about joining me for Share Our Strength fundraising events. Somehow, when they were 10 years old, I got them to wear chocolate chip cookie outfits and participate in the Great American Bake sale held by Share Our Strength staff. Now that Thomas is turning 13, I have to come up with a less humiliating way for him to help me end childhood hunger.

So, on May 9, Mother’s Day, he and Swep will walk with me and my step-daughter Emmy in the “Oprah Live Your Best Life Walk” in New York City. Share Our Strength was chosen by Oprah and her team as one of only 10 nonprofits in the country (and the only one fighting childhood hunger) to participate. In fact, Oprah will be walking along with Share Our Strength’s Team No Kid Hungry and the other charities, and she recently filmed a brief video about the event. Click here to view Oprah’s video.

Since May 10 is Thomas’s birthday, I’m thinking that he will love getting up at 7 am on Sunday to walk two miles to Times Square. (Well, I have to admit I threw in a trip to New York to entice him.) I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate Mother’s day with my children than by raising money to help other mothers feed their families.

For those of you in or near New York, please join us for the walk. You can find registration details at http://strength.org/omag/. If you can’t join us in New York, you can join us virtually by supporting our team with your donations!
