Breakfast in the Classroom

Posted by Michael McKenna on Monday, October 4, 2010

NYC BreakfastIt’s commonly said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You know those mornings when you’re in a rush to get to the office and you didn’t grab a bagel and a cup of coffee on your way…not easy to concentrate when your stomach is growling, right?

But did you know that less than half of the kids in this country that are eligible for free and reduced-price breakfast are actually receiving it? That’s a statistic that doesn’t sit well with us at Share Our Strength and we’re working hard to connect kids to nutritious breakfasts in their schools.

In Colorado, for example, the partnership to end childhood hunger that Share Our Strength established with Governor Bill Ritter has launched the “School Breakfast Challenge” which promotes alternative school breakfast models like universal in-classroom school breakfast and grab-n-go breakfast.

You can see programs like these in action in this video about school breakfast in NYC, which is also a place where Share Our Strength’s resources and expertise are making a difference. When all kids eat a healthy morning meal together, no child feels singled out for being poor, and teachers and students share in the benefits of greater attentiveness, fewer behavioral problems, and better performance on tasks.
