Kids For Kids

Kids wearing No Kid Hungry sunglasses“I think every child has the right to food”

“I don’t want kids to go hungry and I want them to know they are not alone”

“We should work together to make sure kids aren’t going hungry”

These are three sentences that I heard on my recent trip to El Dorado, AR. They didn’t come from the mouths of community organizers, public officials, parents, or even teachers. These strong anti-hunger messages came from kids themselves.

During my trip I got to interview a bunch of kids about their lives in El Dorado. Several of the kids talked to us about how it feels to go hungry and how hard it can be to go to sleep on an empty stomach. And even more kids told us how they feel about the issue of childhood hunger. I was struck again by the power of children’s voices as I listened to 7, 8, 9 year olds tell me that they believe childhood hunger isn’t right. These kids knew, innately, that childhood hunger isn’t just. Many of them expressed, without any hesitation or jumbled jargon that they believe children have a right to food. Children are our most vulnerable citizens and we are responsible for how they are taken care of.

Ask your kids, your neighbor’s kids, the kids in your classroom, what they think about childhood hunger. I bet they might surprise you with their wisdom and passion on this issue.
