Houston Schools Set A Standard For School Breakfast

childhood hunger in houstonThe Houston Independent School District is in the process of implementing the largest in-classroom breakfast program in the country. HISD’s new superintendent, Dr. Terry Grier, is leading the way to ensure that all of HISD’s elementary and middle school students receive breakfast each morning in their classroom. Studies have proven that the innovative in-classroom breakfast model raises participation rates far above other traditional breakfast models. The program has now started in over 40 elementary and middle schools and will continue to expand until every school in HISD is serving breakfast in the classroom.

According to KHOU’s news report, “HISD will phase in the classroom breakfast program at a rate of ten schools per week. By September, the phase-in will be complete and more than 130,000 students will be served each day. Those numbers will make HISD the national record holder for serving breakfasts to students in classrooms, district officials said.”

There is no question in my mind that every single school district in America should follow Houston’s lead and implement in-classroom breakfast for all students. There are challenges that come along with this decision, but the benefits to our children far outweigh those obstacles.
