Summer Meals Making a Difference: Take a Virtual Road Trip with Us

Posted by Katherine Campbell on Monday, June 21, 2010

roadmapWhen summer begins, thousands of schools, churches, and community organizations start serving free summer meals to kids who need them all across the United States.

Share Our Strength is proud to be one of the nation’s leading funders of summer meals programs. From south Boston to Northern California, every region faces the same challenge in the summertime: kids who rely on school meals during the year are left without access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. In response, Share Our Strength and dedicated leaders in all 50 states are working tirelessly to break down the barriers preventing kids from getting healthy meals in the summertime.

We are hitting the road to meet some of these amazing community leaders who are running the programs, increasing participation, and opening new summer meal sites. We’ll be visiting programs that Share Our Strength has recently funded and will be witnessing first-hand how your support has helped our local partners reach more kids at risk of hunger. You can track our journey online so check back often for new stories, videos and photos.

We’re just back from our first trip to Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. According to the USDA, every state we are visiting on this trip has food insecurity rates higher than the national average (12.2%). Mississippi has the highest household food insecurity rate in the country, and Arkansas is third on the list. The need in the region is great, but we’ve already discovered that the commitment of our partners is as well. We look forward to sharing stories, photos and video from the road so that together we can continue to bear witness to the reality of child hunger in our country.
