No Kid Hungry

Hunger is Closer Than You Think

hunger is closer than you thinkIf you think you don’t know a teacher who sees hunger in their classroom, take a closer look.

My colleague has a friend, Amanda, who teaches the 5th grade in Tallahassee, Florida. When I asked my colleague whether Amanda would be a good teacher to interview about hunger in America, she thought it was unlikely that the students in Amanda’s class suffered from hunger. We were quickly surprised to find otherwise.

When we called Amanda, Amanda said without hesitation that 3 kids from her fifth grade class faced hunger. That’s three of a class of twenty-four. Ironically, that is actually below the national average. In America, one in six children is at risk of hunger. In Amanda’s class, that would mean one more child.

You don’t need to go far to find teachers who see hunger in their classroom. Today, all I had to do was ask my colleague to find one more.

I bet you are connected to at least one teacher who sees hunger in her classroom every day. Ask around and see who you find—and let us hear your story.
