Paul Farmer Testifying on Haiti

Posted by Billy Shore on Monday, February 1, 2010

paul farmerIn case you haven’t seen it I’m including the link to and the text of Paul Farmer’s testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about Haiti’s recovery.

As you know he is the co-founder of Partners in Health and also United Nations Deputy Special Envoy to Haiti. Partners in Health has about 5000 employees in Haiti, almost all Haitian, and their ability to work in close cooperation with the government and Haitian medical community has made him one of Haiti’s most knowledgeable and effective advocates.

Farmer points out that Haiti’s unemployment before the earthquake was 70% and that broken promises have exacerbated the challenges of economic recovery, citing as an example the fact that only $61 million had been delivered to Haiti of the $402 million pledged during an international donor conference last April. But he also cites the success of Haitian led economic growth and jobs programs outside of Port au Prince in the Central Plateau and the Artibonite Valley.

You can can Watch a video of the hearing on CSPAN or read the full testimony on PIH’s Stand With Haiti web site.
