Make It Count in 2011

Posted by Billy Shore on Thursday, December 22, 2011

Fighting hunger takes many forms. During the holidays, many consider organizing canned food drives, collect donations for families in need or plan to volunteer with local organizations.

But for many of the families we serve, fighting hunger also takes place in their own kitchens and at the supermarket. With limited dollars to feed kids at home, families struggle to make those funds go as far as possible. That’s where Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters program comes in, by teaching families to stretch their food dollars and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to make healthy and affordable meals at home.

It’s one of the most powerful ways we fight hunger, all year-long. And you can help us reach even more families next year.

Please, make your tax-deductible gift by December 31 to have your gift count in 2011 and help us fight childhood hunger in the new year and beyond.

Eleven-year-old Jordan is just one of the kids who has benefited from Cooking Matters this year. He lives with his grandmother, who has been battling cancer, and together they have struggled to put food on the table.

Recently, Jordan enrolled in Cooking Matters at his afterschool program. He learns how to cook affordable meals and snacks for himself and make healthy choices, even in the school lunch line. Every week, he receives a bag of groceries so that he can go home and prepare the recipes he’s learned. The program is helping Jordan understand that healthy choices can be fun while also teaching him cooking and budgeting skills that will be with him his entire life.

Our programs like Cooking Matters are critical to fighting childhood hunger – but we need your help to sustain and expand our reach. Please make your year-end tax-deductible gift today. Kids like Jordan are counting on you.

Thank you for your generosity.
