Looking Forward in 2010

2010I hope you had a wonderful holiday and new year. I wanted to start off the year with some encouraging news.

We often talk of our strategy to end childhood hunger in terms of a “campaign.” In that sense our year-end donations, on-line and off, represent an election of sorts. And these past few weeks we’ve seen record turn-out — thanks to the support of people like you. As much as that is welcome news in terms of our finances, it is especially important as an affirmation of our strategy and our efforts to communicate it, as well as the numerous platforms, events, and programs like Operation Frontline that we’ve built to engage so many Americans in this cause.

Given the many needs in our society today and the numerous choices that Americans can make about where to invest their charitable dollars, it is truly an honor that record numbers of donors chose to invest in Share Our Strength.

As is the case with any election, the results are not about what we did the past two weeks, but rather the culmination of all of our efforts over the past year: cause related marketing and corporate partnerships, Hinges of Hope trips, The Great American Bake Sale, The Great American Dine Out, Taste of the Nation, “road shows” to present our childhood hunger strategy, the Teacher Report, superb financial management, and an effective and dedicated IT team.

Those efforts are paying off at a time when our neighbors need them the most. Just think about yesterday’s NY Times story describing the 6 million Americans who have no other income or means of support beyond food stamps, and the 36 million Americans now participating in that program. We will have our work cut out for us in 2010 — but with a firm strategy and a strong group of supporters in our community, we have the team to succeed.
