Former AARP Chief Operating Officer Joins Share Our Strength

Posted by Billy Shore on Wednesday, September 28, 2011

I’m thrilled to announce that we have hired Tom Nelson to become president and chief operating officer of Share Our Strength, beginning October 3.

In large part because of our ambitious No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger, Share Our Strength has grown rapidly over the past few years. As former chief operating officer of the AARP, Tom brings tremendous experience in growing an organization to the scale necessary to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. While at AARP, Tom helped transform the organization: He led the build-out of its state strategy in all 53 states and territories, and also led the reinvention of the AARP Foundation, which today has a donor base of over one million and provides direct service to more than 2.7 million individuals.

Tom brings a rare combination of entrepreneurship, management skill and knowledge of how nonprofit services and advocacy intersect with public policy. This will bring a critical asset to our bold goal of ending childhood hunger.

In my role as Chairman and CEO, I am looking forward to working closely with Tom as he takes on the day-to-day responsibility for working with Share Our Strength’s executive and senior staff, and helping to ensure that we all succeed in making No Kid Hungry a reality.
