Science Reinforces No Kid Hungry
By Billy Shore
Each day brings new measures of invaluable support for our No Kid Hungry strategy, but the greatest affirmation of all comes not from politics or celebrity, as critically important as they are to advancing our efforts. Rather, it is from the research labs of cutting edge scientists whose groundbreaking new discoveries in child development coincide with historic levels of child poverty. These discoveries create new urgency for No Kid Hungry. Continue reading »

One Part Flour and Two Parts Fun
The group of pint-sized chefs were beaming as they crowded around the table passing around a large mixing bowl and measuring out the flour for the dough we were preparing. It was week four at the Gosling Road Recreation Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and I was so thrilled to teach the kids how to make a healthy snack. We were making two dozen soft pretzels. Quite a tall order for such small chefs! Continue reading »

Chefs are the backbone of so much of the work we do. Giving Back Through Baking
By Kate W.
In May of last year, my family hosted a Share our Strength Great American Bake Sale. The whole thing was really my mom’s idea. As my mom approached her 33rd birthday, she decided that she wanted to do as much service as she could in a year, beginning with a bake sale for Share our Strength. I loved the idea. For one, it would benefit the children in America who really are starving and in need of food, and for another, I would be able to give back while doing one of my favorite activities: baking. Happy Birthday Let’s Move! And a New Tool to Help Chefs Move to Schools
On Friday I was honored to join First Lady Michelle Obama at an event celebrating the anniversary of her Let’s Move! initiative, and announcing the expansion of the Chefs Move to Schools. With top chefs, the Dallas Cowboys and a raucous crowd of elementary school kids, it truly was a party atmosphere and for good reason. Continue reading »

Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! Organization Shares its Strength
My work with Rachael Ray’s Yum-o!® organization opens the door to some pretty extraordinary experiences in what are sometimes not-so-ordinary circumstances. Some of these experiences have been in conjunction with Share Our Strength, one of Yum-o!’s national partners that we collaborate with as part of the “Feed” component of our mission. In particular, I’ve participated in two of their Hinges of Hope tours – one in New Orleans and the other in New York City – both times affording me the opportunity to see first-hand the work they do to fight hunger. Not only were these experiences eye-opening, but both times I sat down with Rachael Ray immediately afterwards to share more about this work. Continue reading »

Narrowing the Achievement Gap by Narrowing the Hunger Gap
By Billy Shore
Today’s NY Times reports that “in analyses of long-term data published in recent months, researchers are finding that while the achievement gap between white and black students has narrowed significantly over the past few decades, the gap between rich and poor students has grown substantially during the same period.” The article debates the influences of opportunity (or lack thereof) versus culture and asserts that the complexity of the problem defies easy answers. It concludes by quoting one expert as saying “No one has the slightest idea what will work. The cupboard is bare.” Continue reading »

Every parent wants the best for their child. But when you’re among the one in three Americans who lives in or near poverty, how do you put a healthy dinner on the table for your family each night? If – like a record number of Americans – you rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamps), you might have about $10 to spend on dinner for a family of four. Latest School Breakfast Scorecard: Shows Improvement

On Tuesday, the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) released their latest reports on the state of school breakfast in America. The School Breakfast Scorecard and School Breakfast in America’s Big Cities show that in the 2010-2011 school year, more kids ate school breakfast than ever before – but that there is much room for improvement.
