Progress on Hunger in Maryland
Six months ago, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced that he would work with Share Our Strength so that his state would be the first to end childhood hunger in America. The resulting Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in Maryland is already reporting strong gains:
- 24,000 more Maryland children are getting school breakfast.
- 14,450 more Maryland families with children have enrolled in SNAP (food stamps), which means the number of children receiving benefits grew by 16%.
- 25 more Maryland daycare centers are enrolled in the federal food program that provides funding for healthy meals and snacks for the children in their care.
The Partnership is well on its way to increasing the number of summer programs that provide healthy meals and snacks. For many kids who rely on school breakfast and lunch, summer can be long, hot and hungry without such summer meal programs.
On June 3 Governor O’Malley will join Share Our Strength to share a progress report on the Partnership at our A Tasteful Pursuit dinner in Washington, DC. We are also honored that U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsak will be on hand to update us on the Administration’s priorities for improving nutrition and ending childhood hunger in America.
