Latest News and Tips from Share Our Strength's Great American Dine Out®

1,200 Restaurants Already Signed Up for 2009!

Don't miss out on Share Our Strength's Second Annual Great American Dine Out, returning September 20 — 26, 2009 in cities across the U.S. The Great American Dine Out provides the restaurant industry with a viable tool to help end childhood hunger in America even during this difficult economic time. In fact, with 12.4 million children at risk of hunger in America, consumers are combining their decision to dine out with their decision to support a worthy cause.

So far Il Fornaio, Dave & Busters, Corner Bakery Café, McAlister's Deli, Angelina's Tapas and Martini Lounge, Hawks and many, many more have registered for the 2009 Great American Dine Out. This year, there are more flexible ways to get involved that are designed to help your business, too. You can choose what works best for your restaurant or your organization and still make a difference.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a new seasonal menu item and donate the proceeds (see if you can come up with a healthy one that promotes nutrition).
  • Design an Autumn Harvest tasting menu or prix fix menu, promote it locally and donate the proceeds.
  • Turn your customers into “regulars.” Localize the Apple Bounceback Coupon we've supplied on our Restaurant Resource Center with a special offer and sell it to customers (a free dessert or a discounted meal are great ways to get people back in the door!)
  • Invite your guests to make donations online at GreatAmericanDineOut.org.

P.S. Some restaurants have already come up with clever in-house promotions and new menu items to promote themselves and the Great American Dine Out. Can you print a T-shirt? Create interesting dishes for your patrons? Print your restaurant logo on a coupon to encourage repeat business? Then you are ready to participate.

Restaurant Resource Center Up and Running

It's never too early to start promoting your Great American Dine Out. This year our online PR and Marketing portal is even easier to navigate. And we've got downloadable banner ads, press releases, publicity ideas, table tents, flyers, posters, bill stuffers and more. Get ideas and see what's new »

If you love big, bold flavors and cooking for your family, then you'll love Food Network star Aaron McCargo, Jr., our new Great American Dine Out spokesperson. His popular show Big Daddy's House is well into its second season but Aaron still has time to support Share Our Strength's fight to end childhood hunger in America. Aaron speaks to youth in his hometown of Camden, New Jersey and is a bit of a hometown hero — he's got the keys to the city of Camden and, a special place in our hearts, too.

Partner News

The restaurant industry's commitment to ending childhood hunger played a vital role in the success of the first Great American Dine Out. Share Our Strength's Co-Founder Debbie Shore (left) attended the National Restaurant Association's (NRA) Annual Board Meeting and gave special recognition to NRA's Chair Michael Kaufman (center) and CEO Dawn Sweeney (right). Thank you NRA!

Your Good Will at Work

Curious what happens to the money you raise for Share Our Strength during the Great American Dine Out? Because of your hard work and generosity, we recently granted $8,721.00 to the Eastern Illinois Food bank (EIF). With that money EIF was able to distribute 5 million pounds of food! Even better: Every Friday in schools throughout Eastern Illinois, while no one is watching, teachers secretly fill the backpacks of children in need with food for the weekend. It's the Weekend Backpack Feeding program and you helped fund it. This is just one of the examples of your good will at work.

Special Thanks to Our Sponsors and Partners

Thank you to our 2009 sponsors — Sysco, S.Pellegrino Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, Ecolab, Food Network , USA Today and the National Restaurant Association — who continue to make it possible for us to end childhood hunger in America.
